iO Theater has 4 stages that host live comedy five nights a week. And with multiple shows on each stage each night, that’s like 40 shows a week!

Tonight In Improv History

Thursdays at 9pm. Each week, host teams Peggy and Swim Test perform longform improv alongside special esteemed guests, putting it all on the line to be remembered. Don’t just read about this show in your history books, experience it LIVE.

2 Square

Two nights only! 10/25+ 10/26. In 2 Square, John Lutz and Peter Grosz take a single suggestion then spin that into a 45 minute longform show featuring the kaleidoscope of scenes, absurdist transitional elements and callbacks – all while never once using a “sweep edit” to get from scene to scene. They play dozens of characters, create environments and locations using every part of the theater and weave it all together in a satisfying conclusion.

Escandalo!

Escándalo is a weekly variety show that showcases Latine comedians, musicians, poets and much more! The show consists of a rotating cast of improvisers, solo performances, and special guests that all come from a Latine background. All are welcome to come join us in building community and celebrating nuestra cultura! WEPA! Fridays at 10pm!

MEADOWS, WALSH, AND FRIENDS

Join Tim Meadows (Mean GirlsSaturday Night Live), Matt Walsh (Veep), and Joe Canale and Brad Morris of Uncle’s Brother for a night of Chicago-style improv inspired entirely by audience suggestions and experiences.

Improvised Shakespeare Company

Every Friday and Saturday at 8pm since 2006! Inspired by one audience suggestion, these dazzling players create a brand-new Shakespearean masterpiece right before your eyes.  Come witness the shows critics have called “staggeringly brilliant.”

Phony Award Winning presents: Improvised Wicked

Phony Award Winning Musical presents: Wicked! A fully improvised musical with singing, dancing, and a whole lot of gravity defying. Travel to the land of Oz and see our wickedly talented cast Oct 6 – Nov. 24 Sundays at 7 in the Weed.

ComedySportz

Presented by Malarkey Comedy. Chicago’s longest running short-form improv show (founded in 1987) and the only comedy show in Chicago EVERYONE is welcome at – from age 8 to 80, our inclusive ‘everyone is welcome’ approach to comedy makes us perfect for patrons of all ages. Fridays and Saturdays!

Whirled News Tonight

Every Saturday at 8pm. Twenty years running! The audience provides inspiration by picking their top stories from the day’s news. From these journalistic suggestions, a team of experienced improvisers create a fast-paced, topical, intelligent, & hilarious show.

Harold Night

Sundays at 7:30pm. Each week, the talented teams of iO performers come together to create characters, discover alternate realities, and play hilarious bits all inspired by one word from you, the audience! Using the Harold, an improvised story-telling format, iO‘s elite house teams will showcase the wonderful, strange, and thrilling art of improv.

The Seven

An experimental longform improv show that combines 6 veteran improvisers with one random audience volunteer. Come and enter for a chance to be a part of the show, or just come to watch and experience an improv show unlike any other.

Duluth: An Improvised Midwest Murder

Thursdays at 7:30pm. Based on the hit FX show “Fargo”, Duluth takes audiences into the world of true crime in the Midwest. Each week, the cast of Duluth will improvise a story of murder, malfeasance, and general mayhem, all set against the backdrop of an audience member’s hometown.

THE FREE SHOW

Every Wednesday at 7:30pm– A free weekly show featuring Dumb John, Birdlady, and other iO House Teams. Never been to an iO show before? This is a great way to check out longform style improv from some of the best!

The Apocalypse Roadshow

Join us on October 19th at 6:00pm with best-selling author Athena Aktipis, award-winning musician Ryan Biter, and the brilliant improv comics at iO Theater for The Apocalypse Roadshow, a traveling variety show about thriving in the apocalypse in our wild times!

Fridays at 8pm starting 9/20. In this town, the Improvised Housewives call the shots… and they’re thinking Malört! Fridays at 8PM this Fall, don’t miss the most dramatic season of Housewives yet, guaranteed to snatch your wig! 

 

¡Pásele!: Night of Latine Excellence

¡Pásele! means come in! During Hispanic Heritage Month, it means to come to iO Theater for a night of the best Latine entertainment y puro desmadre. This is a dynamic variety show featuring some of the funniest Latine performers in the city doing standup, drag, live music, and more! Wouldn’t be a Dama Productions event without a killer after-party with the best DJs and a pop-up market with Latine vendors! October 10th t 7pm!

Trick or Treat Screening with Marc Price

Metalheads, heshers, and thrashers of Chicago better get ready for an evening of Halloween badassery and 80’s excess with a screening of 1986’s heavy metal horror-comedy, Trick or Treat! Both iO Theater and local event producer Stephanie Sack are especially delighted to announce that the film’s star, Marc “Skippy” Price, will be in attendance for the screening, providing live commentary to picture. A post-screening costume party and Halloween drink specials ensure attendees of this one-night-only event a headbanging Halloween they’ll never forget!

Improvised Jane Austen

Every Saturday at 8pm, Improvised Jane Austen is a comedic ensemble that creates unscripted performances using Jane Austen’s tropes, themes, and language. Playing in Austen’s world, Improvised Jane Austen’s stories delight 21st century audiences with a modern sense and sensibility. Come for the humor, stay for the heart! Throughout the show’s run, Improvised Jane Austen’s has been Chicago Reader Recommended, named a PerformInk Critics’ Pick, voted Best sketch/improv troupe 2019 in the Reader’s Best of Chicago, and was featured on WTTW playlist, in Time Out, on WGN’s Daytime Chicago and most recently on CBS News Chicago

The Armando Diaz Experience

Thursdays at 7:30pm! Celebrity storytelling in an intimate setting, featuring a new guest each week. Chicago’s sharpest and most experienced improvisers perform an entirely unscripted show based on real-life tales told that night. Past guests include: Tim Baltz, John Lutz, & Michael Patrick Thornton. This show was invented at iO in 1995 and has been running ever since.

LOOSE FOUR

Let loose and test out roughly four minutes of material every Wednesdayy at iO Theater. LOOSE FOUR is hosted by Maureen Nolan, with a new featured comic each week! POC, LGBT+ people, and women prioritized! FREE to attend and FREE to participate.

Voila! The Improvised Musical

From cabaret to comedy, heartfelt scenework is intermixed with improvised musical numbers in this two-act fully improvised musical. Every show is unique, so come back each week for the opening and closing night of a brand new theatrical production.

House Teams

iO House Teams are cast from the graduates of the iO Training Center Program. Each week at iO features different house teams performing their unique version of iO’s signature longform piece, The Harold, a combination of scenes, games, group scenes, songs, monologues, performance art, and beyond, all based on a single audience suggestion.

We hold auditions for house teams twice a year. House teams are built from graduates of the iO Training Center Program and our iO Scholarship Program and the iO Internship Program. Check back soon for the next audition date.
