iO’s has a new improv class!
Improv to Sketch with Norm Holly
This is a 4 level course in which students will learn to create their own original material using improvisation as their tool.
Students will also create the form in which their final show is presented and will have a packet of polished written and performed scenes at the end of the process.
The first three levels will culminate in one performance. At the completion of level 4, ensembles with have a set run of their original show at the iO theater.
All classes are taught by Norm Holly.
Norm has spent over 30 years directing, teaching and performing. He has served as Co-Chair of the Columbia College Theater Department with The Second City founding member Sheldon Patinkin, and Artistic Director, resident director and Conservatory Head at The Second City Chicago. He also goes way back with the iO Theater having directed Matt Besser and Amy Poehler in “How Much I lied”. Norm was part of “The Boys”, and can be seen at iO performing in the show “MOLLY”, alongside legendary performer and instructor, Susan Messing.
Level 1: Reality
Students will learn to create scenes and monologues based on real circumstances
and information. Life experience as well as researched subject matter will be the basis for
character and idea generation.
The first three levels culminate in a performance, followed by a multi-week run of their polished and written work after the final level.
Two Level 1 classes will be offered. First day of class will be Wednesday, June 20th or Saturday, June 23rd, depending on which day you sign up for.
**No class on Wednesday, July 4th or Saturday, July 7th.**
