Tina Fey’s Book Sells More Than 1 Million Copies

By Stephan Lee
September 22, 2011
Whether it’s showing up to the Emmys looking like this only five weeks after giving birth, or personifying the 90′s a bit too well, Tina Fey has proven she can do anything. It’s no surprise she went platinum — by selling more than a million copies of Bossypants, not by dyeing her hair to play younger roles — despite her book cover’s off-putting (or fascinating) hairy man-arms. Since its release back in April, the book of funny essays has claimed the top spot on the New York Times best-seller list for five weeks, and has appeared on the list for 23 consecutive weeks in total. On the most recent chart, it appears at number six. Next thing you know, she’ll be EGOTting. Or PEGOTing, in case this whole book writing thing continues to work out for her…..Read Full Article

Image Entertainment Buys Marshall Cook’s Comedy
By Dave Mcnary
September 20, 2011
Image Entertainment has acquired all North American rights to football comedy “Division III: Football’s Finest,” starring Andy Dick, Adam Carolla, Marshall Cook, Bryan Callen and Sally Kirkland.
Image chief acquisitions officer Bill Bromiley made the announcement Tuesday after closing the deal at the Toronto Film Festival.
Image plans to release “Division III” on the college circuit this fall starting with an October date in Michigan. Dick and Cook, who also directed, will be touring with the film.
Story follows a football team in the lowest division in the NCAA that finds itself in the hands of its worst nightmare — an overly aggressive, redneck coach — after their coach unexpectedly dies.
“Division III” is produced by Tyler A. Hawes, Chris Johns and Noor Ahmed. Script is written by Cook, Dick, and Paul Henderson.
Tina Fey Is The Highest-Paid Actress In TV
By Dorothy Pomerantz
September 29, 2011
The 10 women on Forbes’ Highest-Paid TV Actresses list earned a total of $94 million between May 2010 and May 2011. That may seem like a lot, but consider their movie peers: Just the top three women in movies earned almost as much combined ($88 million).
So yes, women make a lot less in TV than they do if they are big movie stars, but there are advantages. Working mothers with TV roles usually get to stay in L.A. (or New York) instead of having to jet around the world to film locations. There’s a steady paycheck and no worrying about Angelina Jolie beating you out for the part in the next big film…..Read Full Article
Seth Meyers In “New Year’s Eve” Trailer
By Aly Semigran
September 29, 2011
Earlier this summer, the first trailer for New Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall’s latest romantic comedy featuring a gaggle of stars celebrating a terrible holiday, featured Josh Duhamel spouting convenient, blanket statements about life (“Some people swear there’s no beauty left in the world, no magic”), intertwining plot lines you could, more or less, figure out immediately (Lea Michele and Ashton Kutcher’s characters will fall in love by the time the ball drops), and that ubiquitous Pink song…..Read Full Article
Jason Sudeikis Kills It In SNL Season Premiere
By Aly Semigran
September 25, 2011
Well, summer is officially over, PopWatchers. There’s no way of sugarcoating it, either. It totally stinks. But hey, at least with the fall comes a new season…of television! (See what I did there?) Now, if you were wondering how the writers of Saturday Night Live, which kicked off its 37th season last night, spent their summer vacations, the answer was right in front of you: penning that 10-minute opening sketch.
So how exactly did they make a 10-minute long skit bearable? Well besides there being no Fred Armisen as President Obama in sight (yeah, I said it!), they did what they often do best: riff on the current political climate. Kicking things off with “either the seventh or eighth” GOP debate, moderator Shepard Smith (played my personal pick for SNL MVP, Bill Hader) announced that he comes from a town “full of secrets,” then introduced Mitt Romney (I’d say “Welcome back, Jason Sudeikis!”,….Read Full Article

Wyatt Cenac in Variety

Comedy Central’s party at Colony was full of old friends in T-shirts and not very many ladies in evening gowns.
“This is a party full of comedy nerds,” explained “The Daily Show’s” Wyatt Cenac, Emmy in hand. “It’s not the sexiest party.”
Cenac also spoke on the friendly rivalry between the network’s two oft-Emmy-nommed shows: “Last year ‘The Colbert Report’ won, this year we won. Basically all that means is Comedy Central should give us all raises.”
The network’s recent roastee, Charlie Sheen, was a topic of conversation. “I was desperate for him to say something racist,” said John Oliver. “I expected some kind of punch line. I don’t find sincerity very funny. If that was sincere.”

EW Says Jason Sudeikis “At His Best” In New Movie
By Owen Gleiberman

Jason Sudeikis, at his eager-beaver best, plays a slacker who persuades his old high school pals (male and female) to join in an end-of-the-summer orgy. In essence, this is an indie Adam Sandler comedy, and when its heroes are psyching themselves up for the big event, it’s kind of funny. But the orgy doesn’t make you laugh — it makes you cringe. For who, even among the ‘’liberated,’’ wants to have sex with their oldest friends?

Joel Murray Is “Hilarious” In ‘God Bless America’

September 10, 2011
By Alex Billington
There are lots of black comedies, which are usually quite edgy, then there are really, really black comedies, and Bobcat Goldthwait (of Sleeping Dogs Lie, World’s Greatest Dad) is one of the kings of those very black comedies. God Bless America is his newest film and it makes quite a bit of fun of America, as if it were Bobcat’s rant against the endless idiocy found there, but it’s also hilarious in dark—very dark—ways. My first thought is that it’s this year’s Super (from James Gunn), in terms of the violence and craziness, and its light, amusing tone throughout, but I laughed quite a bit more during this film that I did in that comedy.
Bobcat’s God Bless America is is pretty much the ultimate anti-American culture catharsis film, in the fullest extent. A middle-aged man named Frank (played by Joel Murray) loses his job…. Read Full Article…
